Goat Moth larvae feed inside the trunks and branches of various trees - they leave the tree to find a spot to pupate.

Killarney in September (1994) is the only place I've ever seen Goat Moth larvae, fully grown and as Matt says, wandering in search of a pupation site.
This one was crueling over a fallen log and, if i remember correctly must have been around 5 or 6 cm long. Thanks everyone who helped with this id, looks like Goat Moth Larvae it is.
