Head colour

Although technically your description "Gull with black head" is incorrect as Black-headed gull has a dark brown head.

The head does look black

The head does look black though, and it is still by far the most common 'dark' headed gull in Britain.
I wonder how many other species have 'common' names that are technically incorrect!

The mediterranean gull's

The mediterranean gull's latin name Larus melanocephalus means black headed gull. Our blackheaded gull is Larus ridibundus which means laughing gull, and of course the americans have their own laughing gull, Larus (or Leuchophaeus) atricilla.
