Description:

I'm really not confident about saying these are backswimmers. I've never seen anything quite like this, with two of them on a twig, clear of the water. After a while, first the lower one dropped back into the water, then the upper one.

But What Are They Up To?

Why have they left the water? Are they perhaps going to move on to populate another pool?

Quite possibly - they're

Quite possibly - they're fully-winged and highly dispersive, which is why they're often the first colonisers of paddling pools over the summer. Another possibility is that they're avoiding waterbourne predators such as fish
