Low-growing, clump-forming plant with 2.5+cm dark-green heart-shaped stalked leaves. Observed to bear violet-type flowers, dark purple, to 1-1.5cm dia, in early Spring. Leaves persist all year.

I agree with Viola. It's not easy to tell from the photo but the petiole appears to be hairless, which I think rules out V. odorata (sweet violet). To me, the strongly cordate leaves suggest V. riviniana (common dog violet), V. reichenbachiana (early dog violet) or V. x bavarica (a hybrid of the two).
