Description:

On south facing steep slope grazed pasture,Did not want to get close ups so just used zoom as I always get stung by them on several occasions each year.It had been dug out of the hole but by what animal as I know it isn't human damage.

Badgers dig out Bumble Bee nests

in our garden. This has happened more than once. The wasps seem to have chosen more inaccessible places eg. under large rocks and fence foundations. Was worried last year that they might dig through our ancient shed floor & destroy a bumble bee nest esp. as the previous owner had put a cat flap in & the door is worn.A barricade did the trick with enough space for the bees which did not return this year.

Nest digger

I agree, the likely suspect is a badger.
