This unusual looking snake was found in Penang Malaysia. It appears to be a Slug Eater, the closest match probably Asthenodipsas laevis - Smooth Slug Snake. However field guides are at odds with the markings of this snake, in particular the bright red eyes. Any thought would be well received.

    Likely ID
    Slug Snake (Smooth)
Confidence: It's likely to be this, but I can't be certain.

smooth slug-eating snake

I think you have it right. I consulted my ID guide for south-east asia and the description for the smooth slug-eater is pretty good for what I can see in the photo. A couple of differences but close enough for a reasonably confident identification.
