Looked hairy, but 'hairs' firm to the touch.

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

I would be tempted to go for lycoperdon echinatum but might be L. nigrescens, L. echinatum has spines greater than 3mm and the other species less than 3mm.
Also could you put the photos on at higher res so we can see more detail
My thoughts exactly. Having looked at my photos I am inclined to go for echinatum.
Will post higher res photos - wasn't sure the system would take it! Will probably return to the woods tomorrow so will take a ruler.
Couldn't refind these ones - others close by had spines less than 3mm.
