Fungi on Ceanothus trunk

Observed: 7th March 2010 By: axon

My Ceanothus died some time ago so I cut it down to a stump and planted a new one in front of the stump. This is growing on the old one. Is it poisonous?

There's not too much to go in

There's not too much to go in the pic - if the fungus has pores and a short stem (black at the base) attaching it to the wood, I might guess at something like Dryad's Saddle (Polyporus squamosus). This is one of the commonest bracket fungi, is not too fussy on the wood it feeds on (and is not poisonous).
