I was pretty sure this was a downy birch rather than a silver birch but looking at the ident guides, I'm not so sure now.

Downy/Silver birch

I wondered about this too. I had always thought that chunky bark meant downy birch but I know that, especially up here in the Highlands, Silver birch can live to a (relatively) great age and that their trunks do tend to develop like this. Or, as you say, it could be a natural hybrid. Nice tree anyway!
