Mystery bird

mystery bird
Description:

Saw this bird sitting by my bird feeder yesterday evening. During the day this feeder is constantly occupied by goldfinches so at first thought it might be a fledgling. On closer inspection (it let me walk right up to it) I could see that it was dark brown and a bit ruffled. As I couldn't see it's eye colour and because it didn't fly away i thought it might be blind but i think it just had its eye shut. I also noticed it had been ringed. Apologies for the poor photo but only had mobile phone to hand before it flew away. Any suggestions on what this could be?

Redpoll

It might possibly be a Redpoll, but I am not the best to judge on colour tone and the picture is a bit hazy, with no real sense of size. I don't know whether anyone is doing a colour ringing project on that species, but it is possible. See what others think.

cage bird

Probably a cage bird escape. Would explain it's tameness and the ring. Has the look of a canary x bullfinch but picture too fuzzy.

The purple colour ring strongly siggests a cage bird rather than a ringed wild bird

Not Necessarily...

As there are dozens of colour ringing projects on wild birds in the UK, the purple ring does not strongly suggest it is an escaped cage bird. Tameness could be due to illness.
