Hello from the West Midlands mentor.

I would like to introduce myself. I'm Sara and I've recently been appointed as the OPAL iSpot Biodiversity Mentor for the West Midlands. If you're in the region too, will you say hi? I'd love to know who's out there recording, spotting and getting to know their local wildlife. I work part-time for Shropshire Wildlife Trust and know the county well, but what (and who) else is out there across the region that I need to see?
My passion is invertebrates, and dragonflies in particular; and I love being outside leading walks, bug hunts- sharing stories of wild things and places.
Looking forward to hearing from you and maybe even meeting and working with you over the coming months!
Sara

West Midlands

Hi Sara

I've just posted my first observations on iSpot and looking around for other local enthusiasts, found your forum post. I'm based near Warwick.

I recently started photographing local solitary bees, but I'm keen on all forms of nature photography, particularly insects. If any West Midlands get formed, I'd love to be involved.

Hi. Like Ed, I've just started posting observations on iSpot, great idea. Based in Coventry. Perhaps if there's enough interest, a walk / get-together / visit to somewhere interesting could be arranged?

Hi John and Ed,
Thanks for posting up your observations and replying to my post. I will find out who else is active in the region and maybe organise something in the new year? In the meantime, have a look at this project based in Shropshire, but covering a much larger area. http://www.invertebrate-challenge.org.uk/
I will keep you posted. Please let me know if you find anyone else wanting to join in?

Best wishes,
Sara

Hello neighbour!

Hello all,
I'm lucky enough to be Sara's neighbour and friend. My little boys and I love to get out and play in wild places and learn about the plants and creatures we encounter. This site is such a fantastic resource.

Well hello yourself- I didn't know you had signed up. Thanks Kristal, and give me a shout if you need any help with finding your way around the site.

Hi,
Thanks for sharing your blog- it makes for really interesting reading, especially the possible insights into the effects of human development on bird populations and diversity. I'll keep visiting! I'm based in Shropshire, so let me know if you're in the area and I can point you in the direction of some good wildlife sites! Best wishes,
Sara

Hi Esther,
Nice to know you are out there showing your four year old the wonders of wild Coventry! I'm heading over your way in the Autumn to maybe work with some schools and community groups, so keep in touch and let me know if I can be of any help. I'll post up details of any iSpot family events coming up in the area too. Best wishes, Sara

dragonflies in wombourne

i counted 11 empty nymph cases in the garden where I was working; about half on tall leaves next to the pond and the rest halfway up the nearby garage wall. One newly hatched (?) adult was seen on the leaves: it was stripy amber/dark brown on the abdomen like the colours of "tiger's eye" gemstone. Date (I think) 24may

This sounds really interesting- do you have any photos you could upload to iSpot?

West Midlands - just!

Hi Sara,

Just thought I'd say hello - I'm based in North Warwickshire, so just in the West Midlands. I've just joined iSpot, and really loving it! My main passion is moths (I regularly run a Robinson Trap), but also into dragonflies and birds.

Kind regards,

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl, welcome to iSpot and I'm glad you are enjoying it. I'm very envious of your Robinson Trap, I bet you've found some great moths? Let me know about your favourite local sites for birds and dragonflies too- very keen to hear of good places to go.
Best wishes,

Sara
