Family Polygonaceae. Very large (up to 40cm plus stalk), ovate mid-green leaves with prominent veins on lower sides. (I think the purplish blotches visible may be due to falling damson and elder fruits.) This specimen has finished flowering; flowers were small, greenish-yellow, star-shaped with pinky-red centres, carried in spikes and also at stem branches. Flo. July-Aug.
