Separating first year gulls

The key characteristis for telling first year Lesser BB Gull from Herring Gull is the colour of the inner primaries - a feature which is not well shown by this photograph. A flight photograph of the same bird would be definitive. In Herring gull they are pale, and in LBB Gull they are dark.

This one was being guarded/defended by its LBBG parents. So easy really.
From the pic the mantle and scapulars are dark chocolaty brown with a narrow pale margin combined with similarly marked and 'un-notched' tertials. Juvvy Herring Gulls are similarly marked but generally paler esp in die=rect comparison with noticably notched tertials

The magic of nature is all around us - we just need to learn how to see it.
