Presumably the cracking was

Presumably the cracking was due to changes in moisture as the fungus was developing although interesting that one of the other observations of this species also showed similar cracking.

If you recall, the weather

If you recall, the weather had been warm and dry for two days after rain. Might this have something to do with the cracking?
