I saw a woodpecker on my peanut feeder yesterday. Haven't seen one of those in our garden before. It was either a lesser spotted or a great spotted.
Unfortunately, by the time I'd got my camera out, it had flown!!
Looking through my bird book at the two entries, from the pictures I thought it would have been the lesser spotted woodpecker. I didn't notice any red on the underside of the body and the black and white seemed to be in mottled lines across the back rather than two patches on the side of the back.
However, reading the description, it might have been too big for a lesser spotted, and the feeding habits of the great spotted seem to indicate that was the more likely.
I'll keep an eye out for it in the future and keep a camera at the ready at all times!!
