Was it on oak? Could be a young Inonotus dryadeus.
Thanks. It was at the end of a hedgerow and I 'thought' at the time that it was on Hawthorn or Hazel....Looking at the bark now I am not so sure. Resolution: Always check what fungus is growing on!!!
