Notes: I have been tempted to think this rather large wasp is a queen of V. vulgaris. However, its markings differ from what I understand to be the norm for this species* e.g. there are six yellow spots on the thorax rather than four, the vertical marking on the face is not anchor shaped and the yellow stripes on the thorax do not have parallel sides. I should be grateful for comment. (* and, I think, the other common species of UK social wasp)
