Does anybody know what these light grey plants are in this picture? I noticed them while being on a 'lichen hunt' for an Open University course. They had tiny stems growing out of the patches with round tops. Could they be fruticose lichen or something different?

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

Just to confuse things, I think these lichens are both squamulose and fruticose. :-)

If you look at this example of a Cladonia species it says "Primary thallus squamulose, secondary thallus fruticose". So the patch is squamulose and the golf tees fruticose!

That site belongs to Jenny Seawright, or "Gardener" as she is on iSpot. Another good one to look at is Alan Silverside's (AlanS on iSpot).
