Not sure you can tell whether it is adult or immature, as young birds undergo an extensive post-juvenile moult and so look very like adults.
The ancient Greeks considered it a bird of magic and superstition, and used to strap a live one to the spokes of a small wheel, and revolve it. Quite what that achieved is anyone's guess!
If you put a jinx on someone, that is where the derivation comes from, apparently.
