Thanks for this... I made the mistake of thinking I knew what it was without opening my book! These "herring gulls", of which my area is teeming, will never seem the same again!

Welcome to the world of large white headed gulls...enjoy the frustration.

This one looks like a fully blown LBBG from the pics (its hard to assess mantle shades from pictures). It appears to be too dark for any of the other ex-HGs. YLG, Caspian and the argetantus nominate subspecies of HG aren't this dark, and there is too much contrast between the mantle and primaries for it to be LBBG intermedius. But we can't see the legs or the eye ring so a probable LBBG it has to be.
