Eider query

A group of four eider ducks seen fairly close to rocky shore. Loch Sween Argyll . One too distant to include in the photo, and another distant one brought nearer in editing to show the rear view.

I don't have much experience of Eiders...not many in the Vale of York! I'd have thought the two together were young, though, as the plumage is very plain and similar tone all over, not clearly barred as in an adult female and certainly not as varied as an eclipse male. The inset bird is more varied and may be a different age, though...difficult angle.

Males in eclipse are very variable in appearance, and extremely confusing to beginners in the field. They always show some patches of white on the head or wings. I think Ophrys has given the answer.
