Female ?

Presumably this is a female due to the not very colourful brown plumage

Yes ...

... though at this time of year you should start to look out for males in ‘eclipse’ plumage. While they are vulnerable because they are moulting their flight feathers they adopt the less conspicuous appearance of the females, many duck species do this. Look for the beaks, this is the giveaway.
