Big black beetle

Description:

Two of these beetles were found under a log at one of the 'Bug Labs' run for children over the summer. Based on Chinery and other iSpot postings I wonder if it is Pterostichus madidus.

I think this is definitely a

I think this is definitely a Pterostichus, although I don't think the shape is quite right for P.madidus (this also often has red bits on the legs).

Red bits

Thanks, I did wonder about the lack of red on the legs. The beetles were very difficult to photograph as they were very fast and just wouldn't keep still for very long!
