A venerable tree -

Quite possibly older than the church. They often marked old ritual / religious sites, and early Christians often commandeered such sites for church-building.

RogerR: That is really interesting. This church at Arthington in the vale of the River Wharfe has been closed for a while but is due to be taken over by a group of Coptic Christians. I hope the yew continues to be left alone so it flourishes.
