These were found in the inter-tidal zone on a North Devon beach. The "flower" type organisms are in a tough jelly-like substance.
These are a form of colonial sea-squirt. Not only are they animals rather than plants but in evolutionary terms they are close to vertebrates, in that their swimming larvae have a longitudinal structure a bit like a rudimentary backbone.
Such quality commenting in the ever Unpopular field of Marine Biolgy.
