It is a wood ant, but the rufa group are a bit of a nightmare since it was found that in England and Wales the 'F. rufa' are mostly hybrids with F. polyctena. It is not easy to distinguish rufa, polyctena, and their hybrids with any confidence in the field, and certainly not from a picture.
