Found outside the house today. About 40mm long WITHOUT the 'spike' at rear!

That is a very nice record - NBNG does not map any in the W Isles. I have put it in the HBRG database.
The spike is an ovipositor, not a weapon, used for drilling into wood, although they have been reported to confuse people with lumps of wood and drilled into them instead.
