Is this a praying mantis?

Description:

resting on swimming pool side drain. 12cm long grasshopper or praying mantis of sorts. Front legs are clearly modified & the creature stands on only 4 legs. Very long slender wings too.

It sure looks like many mantis that I came across in Zambia.

Yes. People don't expect them in the Mediteranean, but I've seen them as far north as the south of France.

I was very surprised to see

I was very surprised to see them in Cyprus but it's that far away from Africa & the swimming pool attracted a huge variety of wildlife that dropped in for a quick drink!

Mantids range farther north than that

Mantis religiosa polonica are found in Poland and western Russia. M. r. beybienkoi in Siberia. And Iris polystictica being in southern Siberia.
