6 inches high, cap 3 inches across dark reddish brown. Stem bulbous and veined wider at it's base than the cap.

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

It was in a patch of grass in a birch forest.
That might explain things then. This species is generally associated with woodland habitats.

Observed in Danby forest North Yorkshire never seen before. The forest is covered in fungi at the moment is this unusual this time of the year
