Description:

In wild garden area,flowers are yellow individual heads 5-10mm across comprising ray and disc florets in branched spikes,leaves stalked and spoon-shaped at the base of the plant,stem leaves narrow and unstalked.

I have Yellow Loosestrife and it is not the same as that so will have to disagree with your identification.

If not L. vulgaris, then I would have thought it would be a close relative. It is certainly not Solidago virgaurea, which is a very different plant.

Your description of the flowers sounds right, though...are you sure you have put the correct pictures up?!

I will post pictures of both plants and this should then resolve the (as I feel) now incorrect id given.I am not saying that we all don't make mistakes but it is not the plant people have agreed on.
