Once you have the ID of the shrub you can go on to look them up on a specialist site and have a very interesting read.

I popped it on the forum for British Galls and 2 people suggested Eriophyes similis
Thanks very much for the confirmation Peter, it would be interesting to know a bit more about the association, do you have any more info? the colour of the galls is red very obvious!
I put on a picture of a very bright red hairy one on a wild rose and got a quick ID. I went on to google the Scientific name and spent half an evening reading all about it.
