Difficult to tell from the photo, but they look very small to me. Are you sure they weren't dunlins? Knot are greyer underneath and have shorter bills. Also smart "scallop" markings on back although this is not obvious at a distance. In flight dunlin show a brighter wing bar and more patterned black and white tail and rump.
