Description:

This fly was very common on Ragwort, this morning. Wings much longer than body, which was only about 5mm long. Flies with a very jerky, hovering flight around the flower before settling.

Setisquamalonchaea

"yellowish caylpterae with a number of longer hairs in the fringe (just below the wing), this with the all black legs.."

I don't see how this could actually overrule John's id though it seems to have done, perhaps it will adjust later. If you don't like the look of this species just add an agreement to the family

Thanks, Jeremy, I suspect you are right. I have since got the key and looked closer at the family and recorded S. fumosa at this site several times.
