Masked Marvel's picture

Could be either?

As far as I'm aware, smooth and palmate newt larvae are actually indistinguishable in the field (although there is supposed to be something about the ratio of the diameter of the eye to the distance between the eye and nostril, but this is unreliable...). The dorsal stripe rule only applies to post-metamorphic juveniles, although I imagine it might be detectable immediately before they leave the pond.

This site would be well within the range and habitat type of both species so I personally wouldn't like to call it.
