IMG 2797 Ruddy Darter maybe
Description:

As a complete odonata novice, I initially thought these were Common Darters but now I think their colouration is wrong and am wondering about Ruddy Darters.

ruddy darters

I think the black legs are probably the easiest way to the correct ID from a photo

You can also see black at the sides of the frons

Like Bob says, the black legs are often the easiest feature to use to seperate this species from Common Darter from a photo. The other features you mention reddish frons and plain sides to the thorax are also visible on the male - and the black extending down the sides of the frons can be seen on both.
