I'm really enjoying my new found love of birds and I'm finding that I'm much more interested in finding out what it is I'm seeing.

Yesterday I saw what looked like a blackbird in my garden. But it wasn't as black as the other blackbirds and it didn't have an orange beak.

I checked my book that I got for Christmas, and saw that it was probably a first winter male blackbird!!! So now I know!!

It's really satisfying when you correctly identify something you've never seen before isn't it? I'm trying to get to grips with lichen ID at the moment, and the biggest problem I have is remembering the names..I know I've seen something before but can't for the life of me remember what it was called! Enjoy your new found love of birds, do you have a bird feeder in your garden?

Hi Sarah, Thanks for your

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your reply. I do indeed have a bird feeder (see other post). I'm going to stock it up over the weekend and have a lazy time taking part in the great garden bird watch (wife permitting!!!)

There are 10 kinds of people, those who understand binary, and those who don't.
