Description:

Came across this bellflower growing on the walls of Norris Castle Farm, while recording with the IOW Natural History Society, which aroused a lot of interest. Seemed to be very well established on these old buildings, as C. garganica was introduced in 1832, one wonders how long it has been there!
The flowers seem noticeably star shaped.

What's the difference........

What's the difference between C.garganica and C.poscharskyana - which is widely naturalised on walls in Britain?

I wondered that too!

Superficially at least, they look very similar.

Campanula garganica v. C. poscharskyana

Our first reaction was that it was a rather diminutive form of C. poscharskyana. A specimen was sent to Eric Clement, co-author of the vegetative key to the British Flora, who came back with C. garganica.According to Will Ingwersen, in his 'Manual of Alpine Plants', C. poscharskyana is a much more rampageous, vigorous long stemmed form of C. garganica. C.garganica has several cultivars and notably starry flowers.
The plants were all over Norris Castle Farmhouse which was built in the eighteenth century, and is rarely open to the public, hence a unique chance to record the flora and fauna a couple of weeks ago!Hope this helps!

Thanks

That would make sense - the one in my garden is distinctly more 'rampageous' - what a great word!
