I looked at the bark...

...before adding the ID of Eucalyptus. Check the full sized image of the first photo and you'll see masses of shaggy bark falling off the trunk revealing pale, smooth bark underneath - very much typical of Eucalypts.

The bark is a rich reddish brown, i cant get very close to the tree but it also appears to be striated. a very beautiful and majestic tree, especially in winter.

I've checked some Eucalyptus images online and it seems plausable that it is this..
