Description:

After 3 hours of investigating marshy heathland, I'd almost given up hope on finding a nest of these amazing arachnids. They seem to prefer pools with islands of Purple Moor Grass or rushes. In the very last area I checked, I saw a characteristic silky dome, spun on a clump of grass. The mother was under the nest. Please take the time to view the full-sized pics as there are some surprising details to be seen!

Some technical details...

...pics are cropped to about 50% of original size. Taken with Canon 5DMkII and 100mm macro lens. The nest was in the shadow of the grass clump, so I was forced to use a ring-flash. I wasn't too disappointed by this as I knew the spiderlings would reveals some spectacular neon colours.

BTW, as this is one of my fave species I have created a video you can view here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IECgL41ockc
