Looks rather ratty to me with that long naked tail. Did you see whether it was alive or not before the heron got it.

I suspect it was alive before the heron got it, I saw the heron go for something, but didn't see it alive.
There are a lot of rats there - they enjoy the bread the people throw for the ducks.

Heron and rat

I can not think of a better end for a brown rat! A wonderful series of photos. I love the photo on YouTube where there's just a tail and hind legs sticking out.
