I concur with you. Waring & Townsend's field guide states that examples are extremely varied in their markings. Given its scarcity and the location this is a really good find !
A group of us ran some traps on Box Hill - chalk grassland mainly, not a habitat I have trapped on. Got lots of good moths, and lots new to me, which will be appearing on here as I process the photographs.
