Adders vs grass snakes

There is an apparent north/south divide running west from Hull, through York and Leeds.

South of this line grass snakes are relatively common but adders are sparsely distributed. North of the line it is the opposite with very few grass snake records and adders being common.

Have you any comments on this observation? Any records to support or any northern grass snake or southern adder records?

Interesting topic

I've seen both at Skipwith Common, which I guess might be on the line and I know a site in Selby where there are grass snakes (but not suitable habitat for adders).
