five armed starfish, orange colouration
No interactions present.
Common starfish aggregate during the spring, most likely to spawn. Spawning is initiated - possibly by chemicals in the phytoplankton bloom - and they develop a characteristic spawning position: up on the tips of their legs as they extrude the eggs or sperm into the current. For many starfish and sea urchins, although not necessarily this species, detection of pheromones within the spawn will trigger them to spawn, causing a "wave" of reproduction.
