Peanut hording woodpecker

Observed: 23rd June 2011 By: geoffhill

I have a pair of woodpeckers which regularly visit my garden, today i noticed one flying between the peanut feeder and the plum tree. On inspection I found that it had in fact been pushing nuts into a open wound in the bark.It crossed my mind that this may be a cunning attempt to encourage insects to gather at this point in order that they can return later for a tasty snack.
