Caterpiller

Caterpiller
Description:

This caterpiller was found on a hardy geranium. We are intrigued by the colour scheme, the red and blue 'buds' at the base of the hairs. They bear no similarity to the colour of the plant it was on and were creating no camouflage!

Not camoflage

They are there to deter predators not to blend in.

Gypsy moth

Looks good for gypsy moth - I've uploaded various images of this species at different stages in its life cycle at http://www.ispot.org.uk/node/68084 take a look and see what you think.

The species is regarded as extinct in Britain although in recent years a colony (probably brought in with plants) has established itself in London.
