A young toad had managed to climb into a bucket of water in our garden and had got stuck!

These two photos are interesting as they show how the camera angle can completely change the colour of a toad. The photo of it in the water makes it look very pale yet in the hand it is dark.

Hello Graham, that's an interesting observation. I wonder if it partly is due to the animal changing colour itself? I think a lot of species go a little bit darker in response to stress such as being handled.
It could be, see the effect of handling on the chameleon:
I suspect the major feature is the camera automatically adjusting its settings - first photo is on a dark background, second background is very pale
