Thanks David...I didn't think it was Elm as it was unlike the mature Elm trees we used to have in our garden, and I have never seen this bark formation before...if you have any idea what causes this bark formation I would be grateful...it didn't cover the whole shrub...some of the bark was fairly smooth.
