Are you sure its Ilex not Quercus? The buds look like Quercus to me with whiskers.
I see where you mean - where the two in-focus leaves join. I had a look at the time and didn't see any whiskered buds. I've had another look at the original photo rather than this scan and it looks like fibres from a broken-off twig. So, I still think it's the hybrid Ilex. However, it's not all that far from where I live so I'll have another look next time I pass by it - as some (like Q. trojana) have few whiskers, it's possible I missed them.
I went for a wander past it this morning and it still looks like the Ilex hybrid. There is a spiny-leaved Quercus not far from here, so I might see if I can get a photo for comparison.
