Larva of some kind

Description:

Creamy-white larva, would lie still on its back then wriggle its tail round in a spiral - trying to right itself? dark eyes and mouthparts, looks like a pair of wings between its 2nd and 3rd pair of legs. About half an inch long.

    Confidence: It's likely to be this, but I can't be certain.

Hi thanks, have googled more pics of chafer grubs and it doesn't look quite like that (although I know what one loos like now, should I see it!).

I think it was indeed vine weevil pupa, as DavidNotton suggested. Not sure if it was in the soil already or in some compost I put into a tub, I kindly put it back into my garden after I'd finished photographing it - next time I'll know and throw it over the fence next door ;) (only joking ;) )
