Interspecific feeding in birds: Robin feeds juv Pied Wag

Observed: 24th May 2011 By: Mike WrightMike Wright’s reputation in Birds
Robin feeds juv Pied Wag 031
Description:

On 24th May I watched an adult Robin feed a juvenile Pied Wagtail about a dozen times over about an hour, and again a couple of days later. I have some reasonable video clips and stills. I have never before seen or heard of such behaviour. Is it recorded regularly?

Fantastic!

Fantastic observation! I cannot believe that Robin and Pied Wagtail will have been heard of often, though it is obviously known in various species.

It might be worth adding this under Robin and under Pied wagtail, separately, so that the picture gets recorded for both species.

robin feeding

I saw photo's years ago of a robin feeding a goldfish in a garden pond.

I suppose.........

I suppose parent birds just see the gape flanges, instinct kicks in, and they thrust the food down the infant birds mouth?
